When You Wake

I've decided that I want to start a new blog to post my poetry on. So from this date forward, the title of my post will appropriately be the name of the poem that I post for the day. If I am as faithful as I hope to be, any of you readers may expect a new poem everyday, whether new or old, it doesn't matter. I have enough in my repertoire to last me close to a year. If the poem is new, I will say so below. If you have to know something to understand the poem fully, it will be stated beforehand. On most days, I will post one that fits my mood at the time. Having said all these things, here is the first one. Entitled, in case you didn't catch it in the title of this post, "When You Wake."

It's Friday night,
and the kids are asleep,
so I want to have fun,
but the time seems to run
as you just lay there and sleep.
I thought of calling your name.
I thought of waking you up.
Instead I just watched you sleep,
and I started to weep
into my big coffee cup.
The time moves so fast
and we just want to chill,
but the clock won't stay still,
and the time starts to fill
with all these things in my past.
I try to be a good dad,
but there are times when I fail.
Then, more often than not,
when my faith starts to rot,
I see what marriage entails.
You are helping me through
every step of the way.
So, if it's not all a fraud,
and I get back to God,
I know just what I'll say.
"Thanks for sending me her,
I know it must have been hard
to let someone so sweet
even maybe be beat
by things she'd rather discard.
Thanks for sending me her,
she helped me get through my life.
I'll always owe you so much
for letting me feel her touch,
and sending her as my wife."
Then when you finally wake
and the morning shines through,
I'll kiss your weak, tired eyes
and I'll try to disguise
that I'm not worthy of you.
I make you sound like a queen,
and try to treat you to show
that you're more than royalty.
You mean much more to me
than any princess I know.
So before the kids wake
and the day starts to go,
I'm gonna just hold you here
and talk in your ear
about not letting go.
So when the day's on it's way
I'm gonna help you get through,
and I won't ever leave,
but you don't have to believe,
because you'll know I love you.
